60 years ago this year history was made when on October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite, signalling the start of the Space Race. Only the size of a beach ball, and weighing no more than an average man, it orbited the Earth at 18,000mph for 3 months before burning up on re-entry. It remains one of science’s most iconic objects.
